Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ June 2026 Showcase Auction Delivers Strong Results Across Diverse Categories

This dynamic seven-session sale brought together more than 3,200 lots spanning U.S. coins, colonial and pre-federal issues, federal rarities, territorial and pattern coinage, Numismatic Americana, medals, tokens, and physical cryptocurrency. With total prices realized nearing $13.2 million, the auction demonstrated sustained collector demand for fresh, high-quality material. This total represents the highest price realized for a Summer Whitman Expo Showcase Auction and is more than double the total achieved in June 2025. Bidding activity was broad-based, with advanced collectors, specialists, and new participants competing for classic rarities, historically significant medals, and innovative crossover collectibles offered in the physical cryptocurrency section. Taking top spot was the unique Judd-1566 pattern quarter eagle from 1878, which after spirited bidding brought $439,200 exceeding its previous record of $432,000, achieved in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ 2022 Global Showcase Auction.

Numismatic Americana, Colonial and Pre-Federal Material

Session 1 featured notable Presidential Inaugural medals, including a rare 1921 Harding Inaugural medal in silver, which realized $36,600 and a 1945 Franklin Roosevelt Inaugural medal in gold, which achieved $146,400.Collectors strongly pursued New Jersey and Vermont coppers, Fugio cents, and other early American issues. Taking top spot among colonial issues was a PCGS AU-55 Ryder-25 Vermont which brought $21,960, a world record for this variety. Among New Jersey coppers, the top lot was the Parsons-Ryder-Boyd-Ford-Karanfilian Maris 15-T which realized $4,636.

• Lot 1179. 1785 Vermont Copper. Landscape. RR-3, Bressett 2-B, W-2010. Rarity-5-. VERMONTS. AU-55 (PCGS). Realized $17,080.
• Lot 1235. Undated (ca. 1902) Fugio Cent Lead Impression. Reverse of 1787 Newman 102-GG American Congress Copper Hub Trial. Uniface. Extremely Fine. Realized $15,860. 

Rarities Night

This session was anchored by a broad selection of rare and high-grade federal issues, including important Barber dimes, quarters, and half dollars from the Young-Dakota Collection. Realizing the highest price among the stunning Young-Dakota coins was a vividly toned Proof-68+ Cameo 1911 half dollar that brought $48,800 more than double the previous record for any Proof 1911 half dollar sold in auction. The beautifully toned 1898 half dollar sold for a record shattering $43,920. 

Other important highlights from Rarities Night include:

• Lot 2113. 1905-S Barber Quarter. MS-67 (PCGS). CAC. The probable finest known coin shattered all records, realizing $53,680. The previous auction record was $11,000 set in the April 1997 sale of the Eliasberg Collection.
• Lot 2208. 1849-D Gold Dollar. Winter 1-B. MS-63 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. A rare Choice Mint State example with CAC approval realized a record for the grade at $26,840.
• Lot 2227. 1879 Four-Dollar Gold Stella. Coiled Hair. Judd-1639, Pollock-1839. Rarity-7-. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-64 BN (PCGS). OGH Rattler. Realized $79,300, a record for the grade.
• Lot 2240.  1868 Liberty Head Eagle. JD-1. Rarity-7-. Proof-64 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. Realized $146,400, nearly three times the previous auction record for the date and more than double the PCGS Price Guide value.
• Lot 2277.  1894-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-65 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. Brought a record $40,260 for the issue.
• Lot 2306.  1882 Pattern Shield Earring Dollar. Judd-1702, Pollock-1904. Rarity-7-. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-65+ (PCGS). CMQ. The famed Eliasberg Shield Earring dollar pattern realized $134,200, a record for the grade.
• Lot 2308.  1966 Washington Quarter. Struck on a 90% Silver Planchet. AU-53 (PCGS). This unique transitional error sold for $41,480, the highest price realized for a 90% silver transitional error ever sold in auction.

• Lot 3142. 1919-S Buffalo Nickel. MS-64 (PCGS). Realized $15,860, far exceeding recent prices for MS-65 graded coins of this date/mint.
• Lot 3263. 1929-S Standing Liberty Quarter. MS-67 FH (PCGS). CAC. Realized $11,590.
• Lot 4263. 1892 Columbian Exposition Commemorative Half Dollar Obverse Die. No. 2.  Realized $36,600.
• Lot 4323. 1856 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-184, Pollock-202, Snow-PT1a, Die Pair II. Rarity-6. Copper-Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-63 (PCGS). Realized $23,180.

Physical Cryptocurrency

Session 5 presented an exceptional offering of physical bitcoin and cryptocurrency, which realized $596,930 in total. Classic, blue-chip rarities from the iconic Casascius, BTCC, and Lealana series were featured alongside low-mintage modern issues from MyBits, Satori, Polymerbit, 1HoDLCLUB, VIP Bitcoins, Denarium, Finite By Design, Freedom Bitcoin, Ballet, Crypto Imperator, and others. The top price of the session was claimed by a 2013 Casascius 1 Bitcoin in silver which realized $88,450, reflecting a collector premium of nearly $25,000 above the bitcoin value. A 2013 Lealana 1 Bitcoin also brought a strong result, realizing $79,300 and a $16,000 premium above Bitcoin. Among the non-loaded category, a redeeemed Casascius 10 Bitcoin earned an incredible $9,150 and an outstanding example of the historic #1 Issue of Bitcoin Magazine also sold for $2,318.
