The Spotlight: Poland World Coins Showcase Auction at Heritage Auctions realized $1,094,491, achieving a remarkable 100% sell-through rate by both value and lots sold.
The tightly curated offering of Polish numismatic rarities in the April 14 event drew competitive bidding across all categories, underscoring sustained collector demand for high-quality examples spanning the Kingdom of Poland, Danzig and the modern Republic.
Leading the event was an 1837-MW Nicholas of Russia gold 20 Zlotych (3 Roubles) 1837-MW AU55 PCGS that realized $73,200. With a mintage of just 423 pieces, this issue is significantly scarcer than those struck at the St. Petersburg mint. Its gleaming mirrored surfaces and strong reflectivity elevated its visual appeal, while its historical context — it was issued during the union of the Kingdom of Poland and the Russian Empire — adds further depth. The coin’s dual-language reverse and designation as “investment gold” by the European Union further contributed to its desirability among advanced collectors.

Also achieving notable results was a Thorn mint August II gold Ducat 1702, MS62 PCGS, which brought $24,400. This one-year type, seldom encountered at auction, displayed vibrant golden luster and a sharp strike rarely seen at such a high level of preservation. Its combination of rarity and condition positioned it as one of the most compelling early modern Polish gold issues in the auction.
Matching that result at $24,400 was a Danzig Johann Casimir II gold Ducat 1660-DL AU55 PCGS. Struck at the Gdansk mint, this example stands among the finer survivors of its type, retaining impressive detail with minimal visible wear. As the last Polish ruler of the House of Vasa, Johann II Casimir remains a historically significant figure, and his coinage continues to attract strong collector interest. This piece’s connection to a monarch known for his patronage of the arts adds an additional layer of appeal.
The auction also demonstrated robust demand for 20th-century Polish issues, particularly rare proofs and patterns. A Republic silver Proof “Rifle Corps” 10 Zlotych 1934-(w) PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC realized $23,180. With a mintage of just 100 pieces and bearing the “PROBA” identification, this commemorative issue marks the 20th anniversary of the march of the First Cadre Company of the Polish Legions under General Pilsudski.

Equally notable at $23,180 was a Danzig. Johann Casimir gold Ducat 1657-DL AU50 PCGS. As a collectible that consistently draws attention when available, this seldom-offered type’s strong result reinforces the enduring appeal of Danzig gold issues within the broader European numismatic market.
Rarities in pattern coinage continued to perform strongly, highlighted by a Republic nickel Essai Pattern 5 Zlotych 1928 MS65 PCGS, which realized $21,960. Struck at the Brussels mint and stamped “#31” on the obverse, this example is tied for the highest certified grade across both NGC and PCGS populations. Its rarity and elite condition make it a cornerstone piece for specialists in Polish pattern coinage.
Another standout at the same price level was a Republic “High Relief” 5 Zlotych 1930-(w) MS62 PCGS, also realizing $21,960. With a mintage of only 200 pieces, this issue commemorates the Centennial of the 1830 Revolution. Its high-relief design and deeply mirrored surfaces highlight the technical sophistication of Polish minting during the interwar period.
Rounding out the top results was a Thorn Michael Korybut gold 2 Ducat ND 1670 H-DL AU55 NGC, which also achieved $21,960. Only one other example has earned a higher grade from NGC than this rare double ducat.
The success of the Poland World Coins Showcase Auction reflects continued strength in the market for high-quality Polish numismatics. Collectors demonstrated a clear preference for pieces combining historical significance, rarity and superior preservation, with strong participation across gold, silver and pattern issues.
Heritage Auctions continues to lead the global market for World and Ancient Coins, providing a platform for exceptional material and delivering strong results across numerous categories.
